Within two years of the assassination, Jacqueline Kennedy had received more than 1.5 million condolence letters from around the world. Some forty-five years later, historian Ellen Fitzpatrick pored over the correspondence retained by the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum in Boston and selected approximately 250 letters for publication in this remarkable volume. Fitzpatrick, who saw President Kennedy speak at Amherst College one month before the assassination in 1963, is professor of history at the University of New Hampshire.
