Our new tote features the distinctive latticework pattern that covered the first floor windows of the Texas School Book Depository building at the time of the Kennedy assassination. Called a breeze block wall, this popular midcentury architectural element was comprised of patterned nonstructural concrete segments. Both decorative and functional, the blocks provided shade and circulation for buildings without air conditioning. John Sexton and Company grocery wholesalers added breeze blocks to the exterior window bays of the 411 Elm Street warehouse in the 1950s. They remained in place on the building until Dallas County renovations between 1978 and 1981 returned the former Texas School Book Depository’s exterior to its original 1901 appearance. One of the few surviving original breeze blocks was displayed for the first time as part of the “Fragments” installation in 2021.
