Our Stories: Black Families in Early Dallas” builds upon the research and preservation projects of the late Dallas historian Mamie McKnight. Her efforts, previously published in the 1980s and 1990s, presented family histories, photographs and brief biographies of local African American community leaders. This new volume edited by Dr. George Keaton Jr. and Judith Garrett Segura adds relevant footnotes and new material, exploring early settlements, schools and the early Black families of Dallas. The book also includes transcripts of oral histories recorded in the 1980s with five of the community’s oldest residents at that time. Co-editor Judith Garrett Segura spent twenty-four years with The Dallas Morning News and was the company liaison to The Sixth Floor exhibit project during its development. She recorded an oral history with the Museum in 2024.
