An outspoken human rights activist, Ernest McMillan was attending Morehouse College in Atlanta at the time of the Kennedy assassination. While in Georgia, he met Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and became active with the Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee. McMillan later co-founded the Dallas chapter of SNCC and ultimately served more than three years in prison following a local civil rights demonstration.
In “Kneeling: Poems and Verses Transcending the Turbulent ‘60s,” McMillan collects a variety of poems and short stories that speak to his experiences as a longtime human rights activist. This is a companion volume to his autobiography, “Standing.” Ernest McMillan is a longtime friend of The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza. In addition to two oral histories, he has participated in a number of Museum public and educational programs since 2006.
