The gateway to downtown Dallas, Dealey Plaza was constructed at the site of the city's founding and completed in 1941. The assassination of President John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963 transformed this symbol of local civic pride into an internationally recognized site of tragedy. In the decades following the assassination, Dealey Plaza has become an important space for social activism and peaceful protest. Many find the site to be a powerfully emotional link to the unfulfilled promise and legacy of the Kennedy era. Dealey Plaza was named a National Historic Landmark District in 1993.
